SALISBURY, Md. – Despite shooting 51 percent from the floor, the Frostburg State University men's basketball team fell to in-state rival Salisbury 70-66 in Capital Athletic Conference action, Saturday.
The game featured eight lead changes and seven ties and the host Sea Gulls (9-4, 2-2) hit a three-pointer with 6:22 left in the second half to grab the lead for good. The Bobcats led by four points, 48-44, with 8:07 left in the second, but Tim Harwood hit a three-pointer at 6:22 that handed SU a one-point lead, 53-52.
Salisbury pushed its lead to six points down the stretch, but Frostburg trimmed it to one, 60-59, with 2:11 to play. The hosts pushed their lead back to six points with 21 seconds left before winning by four.
FSU (6-8, 3-3) shot over 50.0 percent for the fourth time this season as it poured in 26-of-51 shots (51.0%). The Bobcats turned 19 turnovers into 18 points and outscored Salisbury 32-20 in the paint.
However, Salisbury made up the difference with a 21-of-27 (77.7%) effort at the free throw line and nine three-pointers. The Sea Gulls shot 46.5 percent (20-of-43) from the floor, including 56.3 percent (9-of-16) in the second half.
Senior Troy Dockett led the Bobcats with 16 points, including 11 in the second. Senior Maurice Williams and junior Kwambina Coker added 14 and 10, respectively.
Harwood led all players with 17 points. Mike Maczko scored 16 points with seven boards while Mike Atkins contributed 13. Harwood and Atkins each made three of Salisbury's nine three-pointers.
Atkins opened first-half action with a three-pointer, but the Bobcats quickly rebounded for an 8-3 lead off a dunk from Williams. Atkins hit two free throws at 10:57 to help Salisbury regain the lead, 16-15, but Frostburg held a two-point cushion (27-25) with 4:36 to play. SU closed out the opening stanza on an 8-2 run for a four-point halftime lead.
The Bobcats return to the floor on Monday when they host Eastern Mennonite at 2:00 pm.
