Men's Basketball Holds Off Stevenson, 73-68

FROSTBURG, Md. – A near wire-to-wire lead for the Frostburg State men's basketball team came close to evaporating, but the Bobcats managed to hold off a late push from Stevenson to win, 73-68, in front of a lively crowd Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena. Senior guard Troy Dockett led all scorers with 25 points while senior forward Maurice Williams netted 21.

The Bobcat lead reached as many as 14 at several different points in the second half, but the Mustangs cut the deficit to 65-61 on a dunk from Stefon McCray at 2:09. Frostburg (10-10, 7-4) crashed the glass on its ensuing possession to restore some breathing room. Bradley Nunn missed the back end of a pair of free throws, but junior Kwambina Coker pulled down the board and was fouled. He made the first of two free throws, and Nunn returned the favor by grabbing the missed second shot. Dockett was fouled on that possession, and he hit both shots to make it 69-61.

Nunn's free throw with 33 seconds to play again pushed the lead back to eight, 71-63, but a made three-pointer and then two free throws by Stevenson cut it to a one possession game, 71-68, with six seconds remaining.

Williams was fouled and hit both free throws to seal the victory. He was 7-of-8 from the line on the afternoon and also earned a double-double with his 10 rebounds.

Stevenson's only lead of the day came 39 seconds into action when Greg Collins' layup made it 2-0. The Bobcats scored 10 of the next 12 points to open a six-point advantage just five minutes into the game. The first half lead increased to 13 on Dockett's three-pointer with 3:37 remaining. The senior, tied for the NCAA Div. III lead in three-point percentage, went 3-for-7 from beyond the arc and shot 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the field.

The double-digit lead held steady until Stevenson (4-16, 1-10) went on a 7-2 run capped by a Collins' three-point play at 3:29 to cut the deficit to as little as four for the first time since the 9:22 mark of the first half. A little over a minute later, McCray's dunk kept the deficit at four and allowed the Bobcats to ice the game at the free throw line.

Coker finished with 12 rebounds, Nunn had 10 points and nine rebounds and DeSean Antoine had 13 points and four rebounds off the bench.

Both coaching staffs wore tennis shoes with their suits in support of the Coaches vs. Cancer initiative.

Frostburg continues its fight for postseason positioning when it travels to conference foe Hood on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
