Cold Shooting Dooms Women's Basketball at York

YORK, Pa. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team shot just 22.4 percent and made 11 field goals in a 69-33 loss at York (Pa.) on Wednesday night. Sophomore Elizabeth Erickson led the Bobcats with 16 points and six rebounds.

York (15-3, 9-1) asserted its dominance on the boards right from the opening tip. In the first 3:25, Frostburg (5-14, 3-7) managed to attempt just one shot, a layup on its opening possession. In that time, York took 10 shots from the field and missed them all. The Spartans, however, pulled down eight offensive rebounds on those 10 misses. On one possession, York held the ball for only about a minute but managed to miss six attempts and grab five offensive boards. On the sixth, the Bobcats were able to grab the rebound but turned the ball over on its ensuing possession.

The Spartans came back and finally opened the scoring for the contest on a pair of free throws by Brittany Hicks at 17:06 after another offensive rebound. Erickson hit a jumper to tie the score at 2-2, and that would be the only tie of the game. The lead quickly grew for York, sparked by Taylor Santor coming off the bench midway through the first half to ignite a rally. With the Spartans ahead, 9-6, Santor scored 11 of York's next 13 points, including making three three-pointers. At the end of her mini-run, York led, 22-10.

York carried a 35-14 lead into the break and only expanded upon it in the second half. York held a 49-30 edge in rebounds with 20 coming on the offensive end. The Spartans beat Frostburg 19-2 in second-chance points and 30-18 in the paint.

Sophomore Elaina Hummel and freshman RJ James each had six points while junior Brynn Arnone tied Erickson for the team lead with six rebounds.
