YORK, Pa. – After a close first half against two evenly matched teams, York began to slowly pull away in the second to earn a key 81-73 win over Frostburg State, Wednesday night.
Entering the game, the two schools were tied for third place in the league standings, but FSU held the tiebreaker having won the first matchup, 82-73. After the YCP win, the Spartans (12-7, 7-3) take over sole possession of third place, while the Bobcats (9-10, 6-4) settle into fourth place a game ahead of Wesley.
FSU led 40-37 at the break and held a slim one-point advantage, 42-41, with 17:50 to play in the second half. However, the Spartans hit the next basket and never trailed again. They used a quick 8-2 spurt for a 51-44 lead with 14:08 showing.
Frostburg brought the deficit to within four points (61-57) at 10:02, but York extended its lead to a game-high 10 points (71-61) a little less than four minutes later. The Bobcats narrowed the deficit to within seven points inside the final minute of action before losing by eight, 81-73.
After shooting better than 53 percent from the field in the first half with six three-pointers, FSU shot just 40.0 percent (10-of-25) in the second half with just three three-pointers. Neither team led by more than five points in the opening half that featured nine lead changes and seven ties.
Junior DeSean Antoine led the way with 20 points for the Bobcats. Senior Troy Dockett added 19 points behind 4-of-7 three-pointers. Senior Bradley Nunn contributed 12 points and six steals.
Paul Kouvaris scored a game-high 22 points to power the Spartans to their fifth-straight win. Julian Watson and Todd Maciejewski each added 16 points.
FSU returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Stevenson in CAC action at 3:00 pm.
