No. 9 Mary Washington Makes Second Half Run To Defeat Women's Basketball

FROSTBURG, Md. – For the first half of Saturday's conference matchup with undefeated and ninth-ranked Mary Washington, the Frostburg State women's basketball team's 2-3 zone caused plenty of problems for the Eagles' offense. The second half proved to be a different story as Mary Washington earned a 64-44 win at Bobcat Arena.

The first half saw three ties and six lead changes, though neither offense could find a consistent rhythm. Mary Washington committed 12 turnovers in the half, while Frostburg had 10. The erratic pace played into the underdog's hands, however, as the Bobcats (5-13, 3-6) scored 13 points off those turnovers and led by as many as six after Elaina Hummel's three-pointer made it 24-18 with 2:54 to play.

It grew dim from there. Mary Washington scored the final nine points of the first half to take a 27-24 lead into intermission and scored the first seven points of the second half. The Eagles had a 16-0 run over a stretch of 8:21 and led, 34-24, before senior Meische Cox hit a jumper at 14:33 to stop the bleeding.

Frostburg never came within seven the rest of the way, but the Bobcats surely put a scare in the Eagles (18-0, 9-0) in the first half. The Bobcats erased an early 4-0 deficit with eight straight points, capped on a three by junior guard Stephanie Straka. The teams traded buckets, and the lead, with neither team able to push their advantage past four points until Hummel's three made it 24-18.

Hummel scored 10 points in each half and went 4-for-6 from three. Straka scored all nine of her points in the first half and she added six steals and four assists. Sophomore forward Elizabeth Erickson just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds, while Cox pulled down seven boards before fouling out.

Frostburg travels to York (Pa.) on Wednesday to face the Spartans in a Capital Athletic Conference game. Tip is set for 6:00 p.m.
