Clutch Free Throws Propel Men's Basketball Past Mary Washington

FROSTBURG, Md. – Made free throws were hard to come by as both teams struggled to shoot 50 percent from the charity stripe. In the end, Frostburg State made two when they counted the most.

Senior Bradley Nunn drained two free throws with eight seconds left and a deep three-pointer from Mary Washington in the closing seconds was off the mark as Frostburg State escaped with a one-point victory, 76-75, over CAC-leading Mary Washington, Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats (9-9, 6-3) trailed by one point, 75-74, after EJ Willis hit a deep three-pointer with 53 seconds left to hand UMW (13-5, 8-1) its first lead since early in the second half.

Frostburg's next two trips down the court resulted in a turnover and a missed three-pointer with 11 seconds left. However, the ball hit an Eagle player and trickled out of bounds to give FSU one final opportunity.

Given the responsibility of passing the ball in bounds below the basket, Nunn got creative. He passed the ball to himself by tossing it off the back of a Mary Washington defender. He grabbed the ball and went for a layup, but was fouled and went to the free throw line for the two game-winning free throws.

Despite the contest being close down the stretch, neither team could take control because of the struggles at the foul line. FSU finished 17-of-34 (50.0%) while UMW shot 19-of-36 (52.8%).

The game featured eight lead changes and three ties and the Bobcats held the game's largest lead at 11 points, 32-21, with 4:31 to play in the first half. Frostburg led by eight, 39-31, at halftime.

Mary Washington, handed its first league loss of the season, rebounded early in the second half with an 11-2 run for a 42-41 lead just over two minutes into action.

The Bobcats slowly edged their way back into the lead and led by 10 points, 59-49, at the 11:22 mark. UMW cut it to one point with 4:09 showing on the clock, but FSU hit two baskets to increase its lead to five, 74-69, with 3:20 left.

Mary Washington made a layup and a free throw and trailed by just two points before Willis' three-pointer gave the visitors the one-point lead with under a minute to play.

Four players scored in double figures for the Bobcats. Senior Troy Dockett scored a game-high 26 points, with seven rebounds and three three-pointers. Reigning CAC Player of the Week Maurice Williams chipped in 12 points followed by Kwambina Coker (11 pts.) and Ladi Odunlami (10 pts.).

Bradley Riester led UMW with 15 points while Henry Brisibe scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Frostburg State hits the road on Wednesday with a CAC matchup at York (Pa.) at 6:00 pm.
