Bridgewater Pulls Away From Women's Hoops For 71-59 Win

FROSTBURG, Md. – When sophomore guard Elaina Hummel drained a free throw to complete a four-point play to give the Frostburg State women's basketball team a 52-49 lead over visiting Bridgewater with 8:41 to play on Wednesday night, things were looking up for the Bobcats as they had their largest lead of the night.

Over the next 6:58, however, Bridgewater would erase any tension by going on a 16-1 run to ease into a 71-59 non-conference victory.

Bridgewater got off to a fast start, scoring 14 points in the first 2:56 of action. The Bobcats (5-12) mostly matched the Eagles blow-for-blow even though they only led for 18 seconds in the entire first half. Junior guard Stephanie Straka scored 10 points in the first, with the final two of those coming on a layup to pull the Bobcats to within 27-26 at 7:24. A 9-0 Eagles' run put the lead at 10 with 2:38 remaining, and it stood at 39-30 into the intermission.

Frostburg chipped away in the second half by not allowing the deficit to stretch past 10 points and tied the score at 46-46 on Straka's bucket with 11:27 to play. A couple of minutes later, Hummel hit her fifth three-pointer as she was fouled to give the Bobcats that 52-49 lead with 8:41 left.

The Eagles turned up the pressure and allowed just two Frostburg field goals the rest of the way. After shooting 42.9 percent in the first half, the Bobcats' percentage dipped to 29.7 in the second to settle at 35.4 percent. Bridgewater held steady throughout, finishing the game at 46 percent. The Eagles also went 23-of-33 from the line with the Bobcats hitting on eight of their 10 attempts.

Hummel finished with a game-high 26 points while adding three steals. Straka had 15 points, four assists and three rebounds. Senior Meische Cox had seven points, eight rebounds and six steals. Junior Brynn Arnone had a game-high 10 rebounds while freshman Bobbi McDonald pulled in six boards.

The Bobcats move back into Capital Athletic Conference action Saturday when they host ninth-ranked and undefeated Mary Washington at 1:00 p.m.
