STEVENSON, Md. – Frostburg State led by as many as 21 points in the second half, but had to hang on for a 75-70 victory over Stevenson in Capital Athletic Conference play, Wednesday.
The Bobcats (7-9, 4-3) held a 55-34 lead with 12:05 showing in the second half, but watched as Stevenson (3-11, 0-5) battled back and closed to within three points late in the game.
A key 7-0 spurt brought the deficit to single digits, 60-52, with 5:19 showing on the clock. At 2:40, a three-pointer continued the surge for the Mustangs as they moved to within three points, 65-62. It was the closest SU had been since trailing by two points with 7:02 left in the opening half.
On the ensuring trip down the floor, FSU senior Maurice Williams hit a timely three-pointer that pushed the lead to 68-62. Fellow senior Troy Dockett gave the Bobcats a little more breathing room with a jumper at 1:30 that handed them a 70-63 edge.
Following a Stevenson basket at 1:17, the Bobcats made three-of-four free throws attempts for a 73-65 lead as the clock dipped inside of one minute.
Stevenson hit a three-pointer with 16 seconds remaining to trim it to 73-68, but Williams made back-to-back free throws with 12 seconds left to seal the win for FSU.
Williams led all players with a game-high 26 points. He shot 60.0 percent (9-of-15) from the field, and was perfect from both three-point range (2-of-2) and the free throw line (6-of-6). Dockett was equally as impressive, scoring 20 points and shooting 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the floor. Freshman Jabari Kamau added 11 points.
In the first half, Stevenson jumped out to a 9-2 lead over the first five minutes of action, but it was all Bobcats after that.
Frostburg rebounded behind an 11-3 jolt to grab a one-point cushion, 13-12, with 9:54 showing. Dockett was the driving force behind the run, scoring seven points and dishing out one assist. He found Williams who drained a three-pointer that capped that outburst.
The game was tied at 16-16 moments later, but the Bobcats collected a 9-0 run to surge ahead 25-16 with 4:46 left to play. FSU further extended its lead to 28-18 with 2:01 left before heading into the locker room with an 11-point lead, 34-23.
Frostburg used the first 7:55 of the second half to build its lead to a game-high 21 points, 55-34.
Stevenson was paced by Brett Burrier who scored 24 points, including a 9-of-10 effort from the foul line. Greg Collins chipped in 21 points with a game-high three three-pointers.
FSU returns to the floor on Saturday when it hosts St. Mary’s at 4:00 pm.
