Men's Soccer Gets Back On Track With Win Over Lycoming

FROSTBURG, Md. -  Junior Ryan Russell scored a pair of goals and junior goalkeeper Abiye Jack earned his fourth shutout of the season as the Frostburg State men's soccer team defeated Lycoming, 2-0, in non-conference action Wednesday night at Bobcat Stadium.

Box Score

Russell drew a foul on the left side just outside of the box in the 11th minute, and he slammed home the free kick, beating Warrior keeper Keenan Connor to the goalie's right. That gave Russell a goal in five-consecutive games, the first time that's happened for a Frostburg player in six years. Matt Moffa hit that consecutive game mark in the 2005 season while ultimately scoring in six of seven matches in that stretch.

Russell's streak is still alive and kicking, and he added some insurance for the team in the 82nd minute on a fancy individual play. Russell beat a defender on the left side and slid the ball into the right corner past a diving Connor to make the score 2-0.

The best chance Lycoming (5-4-1) had came just after halftime with the score still 1-0. Warrior forward Matt Snively likely thought he had tied the game as he shot towards an open net, but a quick foot from a Bobcat defender redirected the ball wide.

Frostburg (6-1-1) outshot the Warriors 11-8, with Russell accounting for six of them. Jack made a pair of saves to earn that fourth shutout.

The Bobcats stay home for a Capital Athletic Conference tilt with Mary Washington on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
