FROSTBURG, Md. - Alex Vanagas scored the game's only goal for Carnegie Mellon as it handed the Frostburg State University women's soccer team a 1-0 loss in non-conference action, Thursday night.

The loss is the first of the season for the Bobcats as they fall to 5-1 overall. The Tartans improve to 3-2 with their third-straight win.
Unfortunately, the FSU defense saw most of the action as Carnegie Mellon possessed the ball in its offensive end for much of the contest.The Tartans attempted nine first-half shots and got on the scoreboard on their third attempt. Venegas squirted through the Bobcat defense and tracked down a pass from Savina Reid before putting a shot in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
CMU finished off the first half with six more shots and totaled sox corners kicks in the opening stanza. Senior goalkeeper Michelle Buckmaster made three saves in the first to keep CMU from adding to its total.
The second period brought more of the same from the Tartans as they outshot the Bobcats 6-3. Buckmaster stepped up to make four saves in the second half while senior defender Nikki Rieland did her part by blocking a shot and clearing it off the goal line for a team save.
In the closing minutes, FSU showed a spark on offense attempting a pair of shots and testing the visiting defense. However, Tartan keeper Anna Albi made two late saves and the Carnegie Mellon defense did what it could to keep the Bobcats from tying the game.
The visitors finished with a 15-4 advantage in shots and held an 11-1 edge in corners kicks.
Buckmaster made a season-high seven saves and allowed just her third goal in seven games this season. Albi grabbed the win for CMU with four saves.
The Bobcats open Capital Athletic Conference action this Sunday when they host Mary Washington at noon.
