Bobcats Fall in CAC Opener to York (Pa.)

FROSTBURG, Md. - York (Pa.) grabbed an early lead and never trailed en route to an 11-5 victory over the Frostburg State University men's lacrosse team, Saturday. The contest was the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both squads.

John Dubois scored a pair of first quarter goals and York (5-2, 1-0) grabbed a 4-0 lead after the opening quarter.

The Bobcats (3-5, 0-1) answered with two goals to open the second quarter and cut into the deficit. Bobcat freshman Brandon Lutz (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) found the back of the net off a pass from classmate Phil Hess (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) as the hosts got on the scoreboard with 8:15 left in the opening half. A little over two minutes later, sophomore Lucas Flaig (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) cut the York lead to 4-2 when he scored off a pass from freshman Andy Luhmann (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods).

The Spartans pushed their lead back to four goals, 6-2, with two scores in the final minutes of the second half. Justin Aita scored for the second time in the game (3:42) and Corey Cooke scored a man-up goal (2:03) as the visitors led 6-2 at halftime.

The Bobcats opened the third quarter with a goal from Hess at 14:11, but York again stymied any FSU comeback. The Spartans scored the final three goals of the third quarter to extend their advantage to 9-3.
Neither team had any success for the first part of the fourth quarter. York scored the game's second and final man-up goal at 4:27 to increase the lead to 10-3.

The Bobcats responded with a pair of goals sandwiched around York's final score of the afternoon. Freshman Marcus Kyricacou (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) scored for the third-straight game, this time with 2:37 left to bring the score to 10-4. YCP scored with 53 seconds left for an 11-4 edge, but Bobcat freshman Zach Kowatch (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) scored with no time remaining for the 11-5 final.

Despite the loss, Frostburg State outshot York 33-25, with 23 shots coming during the second half. FSU also finished 16-of-20 on clear attempts. Hess led FSU in scoring with a goal and an assist.

Eight different players scored for YCP including three players with two goals each; Dubois, Aita and James Lowe. Keeper Tyler Powell made 11 saves in earning the win.

Frostburg State continues CAC action when it travels to Wesley for a 7:00 pm game on Wednesday, March 23.
