Widener Too Much in 12-5 FSU Loss

CHESTER, Pa. - The Frostburg State University men's lacrosse team dropped its second-straight road contest with a 12-5 setback to Widener, Saturday. The Bobcats dropped to 2-4 overall while the Pride improve to 2-1.

The Bobcats fell behind 4-0 as Widener opened action with four-consecutive goals that covered the entire first quarter and the first 1:06 of the second. Sophomore Lucas Flaig (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) scored an unassisted goal at 12:46 that put FSU on the scoreboard and ended the Pride run.

Widener extended its lead to 6-1 with back-to-back goals at 11:59 and 6:52, but Frostburg added its own two-goal run to narrow the count to 6-3 at halftime. Flaig scored his second goal of the first half, this time off a feed from freshman Marcus Kyricacou (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) at 6:31, and freshman Ryan Serio (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) scored off a pass from junior Dan Dowd (Friendship, Md./Southern) for the game's only man-up goal with 5:46 showing in the second quarter.

Widener took control of the game in the third quarter as it outscored Frostburg 5-2. The Pride opened the second half with two goals less than two minutes into action. Bobcat freshman Brandon Lutz (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) scored for the third-straight game and temporarily halted Widener's momentum with 10:21 left.

However, the Pride added three-straight goals over a 4:33 stretch that started with 7:02 remaining in the third quarter for an 11-4 lead.

The Bobcats found the net for the final goal of the third to bring the score to 11-5. After a Widener turnover and a Bobcat shot that hit the post, Serio collected the groundball and found Kyricacou who scored past Widener keeper Mac Nestler.

Despite attempting 11 shots in the final quarter, Widener opened the fourth with the game's final goal at 13:37.

Flaig led FSU with two goals while both Kyricacou and Serio added a goal and an assist. Freshman Billy Lark (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) was 9-of-11 on faceoffs while freshmen Tyler Haines (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) made 11 saves in net. As a team, the Bobcats led 12-8 in faceoffs, but committed 21 turnovers, including 10 in the first. FSU finished 13-of-17 on clears and picked up 17 groundballs.

Widener had six different players score in the contest, but the Pride received a huge boost from its bench as it accounted for six goals and two assists. Despite not starting, Andrew Janusz led all players with four goals. Johnny Casey finished with three goals and an assist. All three of his goals came during the 4-0 spurt that opened the game for Widener.

Frostburg State returns to the friendly confines of Bobcat Stadium on Monday when it hosts St. Joseph's (Maine) at 4:00 pm.
