Men’s Lacrosse Suffers Overtime Loss to Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a game that featured several scoring runs from both teams, the Frostburg State men’s lacrosse team suffered an 8-7 overtime setback to Catholic in non-conference action, Saturday.

The Bobcats (1-2) made it tough for the Cardinals (2-0), who needed a pair of late goals to earn the win. CUA broke a 4-4 halftime tie with two goals to open second half action for a 6-4 lead. The Bobcats rallied with a late third quarter goal and two more scores in the fourth, including the final tally with just 1:32 left in regulation, to grab a 7-6 lead.

However, CUA evened the game at 7-7 with a goal just 1:00 left in the fourth and later scored the game winner 3:26 into overtime to escape with the win.

Both teams scored goals in clumps in the opening half. Sophomore Lucas Flaig (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) scored three-straight goals to open action in the first quarter and hand the visitors a 3-0 lead. Junior Dan Dowd (Friendship, Md./Southern) found the net early in the second quarter (13:28) as FSU held a 4-0 edge.

CUA got on the board at 12:34 in the second and later added three more goals over a five-minute stretch late in the second to knot the game at 4-4 at intermission.

Flaig powered FSU offensively in the first quarter with his three goals. Dowd and freshman Ryan Serio (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) each added two scores while freshman Phil Hess (Ephrata, PA./Ephrata) dished out four assists.

Freshman Tyler Haines (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) made eight saves in his second-straight start in net.

Tyler Catalani scored three times to lead the Cardinal attack while Branden Englert added two goals and one assist. Sean McKenna made 12 saves in net for the win for CUA.

Catholic narrowly edged FSU in shots (31-28) and led in ground balls (40-25). The Bobcats were a near perfect 20-of-23 in clear attempts.

FSU hosts Neumann next Saturday at Bobcat Stadium at 1:00 pm.
