Second Half Drought Dooms Women's Basketball at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Neither the Frostburg State women's basketball team nor their opponents from Mary Washington particularly lit the world on fire in the first half of their Capital Athletic Conference tilt Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, it was the Eagles who turned it on in the second to break open a one-point halftime lead to cruise to a 64-31 victory.

Box Score

It truly was a tale of two halves for Mary Washington. In the first, the undefeated Eagles (6-0, 2-0) made just four field goals on their way to a 15.4 percent field goal percentange. Mary Washington made just one of its 10 three-point attempts but managed to take a 16-15 lead into the intermission by making seven free throws.

Frostburg (2-5, 0-2) could not take advantage of the Eagles' slow start. The Bobcats shot just 31.6 percent from the field (6-of-19) and made three of seven attempts from the line. Sophomore Elizabeth Erickson had three points and seven rebounds in the first half.

The teams traded baskets for the first four minutes of the second half as freshman guard Simone Wise pulled the Bobcats to within 26-24 with 16:07 to play. In the next 3:49, however, Mary Washington went on a 12-0 run to break it open to 38-24. Senior India Hall hit a layup and sophomore Elaina Hummel hit a three with 10:49 remaining to stop the run and drop the lead below double-digits at 38-29. Hummel's three would turn out to be the final shot Frostburg would hit from the field.

Mary Washington went on an even bigger run at that point, outscoring the Bobcats, 26-1, until freshman forward Shaniqua Hall hit a free throw with 1:29 remaining to close out the scoring at 64-31. Erickson finished with team highs in points (6), rebounds (9) and assists (2). The Eagles outscored the Bobcats 22-4 in the paint and 25-0 off of turnovers.

Frostburg opens the home portion of its CAC schedule Wednesday against Hood at 6:00 p.m.
