FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State University men's basketball team hurdled several obstacles, including a double-digit deficit in the second half, but its rally came up just short as a free throw with three seconds left handed visiting Bethany a slim one-point victory, 74-73, Monday night. Frostburg slips to 4-5 with the loss, while Bethany remains undefeated at 9-0.
The Bobcats overcame a poor first-half shooting percentage, 10 Bethany three-pointers and a 10-point deficit midway through the second half to take a one-point lead, 73-72, with 1:05 remaining in regulation.
After Bethany missed a three-pointer with 47 seconds left, Nick Wilcox grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled. He made one of two free throws to knot the game at 73-73 with 43 seconds left.
The Bobcats called a pair of timeouts, but missed a jumper from the free throw line with nine seconds showing. Bethany pulled down the rebound, raced to the other end of floor and Wilcox drew a foul to head to the free throw line for two shots. After missing the first, he made the second to hand Bethany a one-point edge.
With just three seconds left in the game, Bobcat junior DeSean Antoine took the inbound pass and maneuvered to the three-point line at the Frostburg end of the floor, but a three-pointer was off the mark and Bethany escaped with the victory.
The flurry of action late in the game was due in large part to Frostburg's five three-pointers in the first 5:34 of the second half. FSU trailed by 14 points, 41-27 at halftime, but hit five three's and closed to within three points, 51-48, at 14:26.
The Bison answered with a pair of their own three-pointers as they surged back to a 10-point lead with 10:35 to play. However, the Bobcats collected a 10-3 run, capped by a senior Troy Dockett three-pointer at 7:07 as they trailed by just three, 64-61.
FSU further trimmed the deficit to one, 70-69, with 3:20 to play, but Wilcox scored Bethany's final five points, all at the charity stripe, to earn the win.
The lead changed five times in the opening half and Bethany used a quick 8-0 scoring outburst for a 10-point cushion at 8:00. FSU cut it to five with 4:47 left in the first, but the Bison closed out the opening period on a 12-3 scoring run for a 41-27 lead at the break.
FSU shot just 30.6 percent (11-of-36) from the floor in the first half while Bethany finished at 58.3 percent shooting (14-of-24) with four three-pointers.
Dockett tied a school record with seven three-pointers and led all players with 24 points, just one off his career high. He was 7-of-9 from behind the arc and chipped in five assists and four steals. He scored 19 points in the second half and was a perfect 6-of-6 from three-point range. He hit four three-pointers in the first 10 minutes of the second to help key the Bobcat rally.
Senior Maurice Williams finished with 17 points and nine boards while junior Kwambina Coker had 11 points and nine rebounds. Antoine added 10 points and a game-high seven assists.
The Bison finished at 51.1 percent shooting, including an impressive 10-of-20 from beyond three-point range. Wilcox led the team with 20 points, including 11 from the foul line, while James Barton had 19 points behind four three-pointers.
