Women’s Basketball Falls to CAC Leader York

Frostburg, Md. - A poor shooting day for the Frostburg State University women's basketball team was too much to overcome as they fell to York College (Pa.), 64-48  on Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.

Box Score

Both defenses put the clamps on in the first half as each team struggled to put the ball in the basket.  FSU (3-6, 1-3) shot only 25.9 percent from the field, while York was limited to 26.5 pecent shooting.

After York opened the game on a 12-2 run, the Bobcats clawed back into the game behind Stephanie Straka's 13 first half points.   The Bobcats cut the lead to just one point, 24-23, with 29 seconds left to play in the half on Straka's old-fashioned three-point play.

However, Kelsey Murphy drew a shooting foul with two seconds remaining and knocked down all three free throw attempts.  Then, Aja Wallpher stole the FSU inbounds pass and layed the ball in as time expired to give York a 29-23 halftime lead.

York heated up in the second half and extended their lead to 42-29 with 12:22 left.   The Bobcats cut the lead to seven after two RJ James free throws, but a 9-0 York run would put the game out of reach at 53-37 with 7:25 left.

York held a 53-41 rebounding edge over the Bobcats and shot 45.2 percent from the field in the second half.

Straka finished the game with 18 points to go with six boards.  Elaina Hummel finished with 10 points and Elizabeth Erickson scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds.

York was led by Kelsey Murphy's 19 points and April Sparkman notched a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.  Brittany Hicks also snatched 12 rebounds for the Spartans (8-1, 4-0).

The Bobcats return to action on Monday when they hit the road to take on Shenandoah at 6:00 p.m. in non-conference action.
