Furious Rally Falls Short in Loss at Marymount, 71-63

ARLINGTON, Va. - For the better part of 32 minutes Wednesday night, it looked as though the Frostburg State women's basketball team would pose no threat to Capital Athletic Conference opponent Marymount (Va.). With 8:19 to play, Marymount's Sam Spencer hit a three to put the Saints ahead by their biggest margin of the night at 56-40. In the ensuing 6:34, the Bobcats raced back on a 23-7 run to tie the score with under two minutes to play. It wouldn't hold up, though, as Marymount scored the final eight points en route to a 71-63 victory in the conference opener for both teams.

After Spencer hit that three to put Marymount ahead by 16, sophomore guard Elaina Hummel and junior forward Brynn Arnone tossed the Bobcats on their backs. The pair scored the next 12 points for Frostburg and cut the lead in half to 60-52 with 4:03 to play. A minute later, Frostburg (2-4, 0-1) still found itself down by nine after another Spencer three put the count at 63-54. The Bobcats still had one more run.

Freshman Kyler Redmond started the run with a bucket, while sophomore Stephanie Straka sandwiched an Erickson make with a three and a two of her own. The two-pointer tied the score at 63 with 1:45 to play and capped runs of 9-0, 17-3 and 23-7. After all that, Spencer hit her fifth three-pointer of the night on the ensuing possession to put the Saints ahead for good as Frostburg would not score again.

Marymount (3-3, 1-0) never trailed and led by as many as 15 in the first half on two separate occasions, including 35-20 at the intermission.

Frostburg trailed by double digits from the 3:30 mark of the first half until Arnone's basket with 4:03 remaining in regulation. While shooting just 32.1 percent in the first half and making their only free throw attempt, the Bobcats found their footing in the second. They raised their shooting to 45.5 percent while making 11-of-15 from the stripe.

Hummel led the Bobcats with 15 points. Freshman RJ James had eight points and six rebounds, while Straka and Erickson each had eight points and four rebounds. Straka added five assists and five steals.

Frostburg continues its CAC road trip Saturday at Mary Washington. Tip is set for 2:00 p.m.
