YORK, Pa. - The Frostburg State volleyball team trailed late in the fourth set and battled back to force a fifth and decisive game and appeared on the verge of completing the comeback. However, York held on to defeat visiting Frostburg, 3-2, in a rematch of last year's CAC Tournament semifinal thriller.
Since Frostburg joined the CAC last year, the two teams have met three times and the series has been anything but dull. Last season, the Bobcats captured a 3-1 regular-season win and then battled back for a 3-2 victory in the league tournament semifinals.
This time around, the Spartans (12-13, 3-4) got the upper hand in yet another thriller. The match went back-and-forth as York posted a 25-18 win in the first set. FSU won game two, 26-24, but YCP pushed the match to 2-1 with a 25-19 victory in the third. York appeared to have everything under control with a 24-19 lead in the fourth set. However, the Bobcats (14-16, 4-2) battled to back to win the fourth, 28-26, and force a fifth game.
In the end, York proved too much as it posted a 15-10 win to capture the fifth set and the match.
Senior Sabrina Winterling led the Bobcat attack with 17 kills and a .324 hitting percentage. Freshman Andrea Armstrong posted a double-double with 10 kills and a season-high 23 digs.
Senior Kylie Carrington handed out 45 assists and posted seven kills and eight digs. It's her fourth match with 40 or more kills this season.
On the defensive side of things, freshman Maddie White had an outstanding evening. She posted 32 digs, her third highest total of the season, to lead all players. Junior Chelsea McCloskey added 12 digs.
The Spartans had four players with 10 or more kills, led by 16 from Melissa Patterson. Cortni Rentzel passed out 57 assists and posted 11 digs. Ashley Rineman led all Spartans with 30 digs.
Frostburg remains in CAC play with a home match and senior day against St. Mary's this Saturday at 11:00 am.
