Men's Soccer Ties Mary Washington

FROSTBURG, Md. - After 110 minutes of action at Bobcat Stadium Saturday afternoon, the Frostburg State men's soccer team tied Capital Athletic Conference leader Mary Washington 1-1.

Box Score

Most of the action in the first half took place in the midfield as Mary Washington (4-4-2) would have no shots on goal and the Bobcats (6-1-2) would muster only six shots themselves.  Senior Jamie Flewellyn's header was the best chance for a goal for Frostburg, but Eagle goalie Tyler Back was there to make the save.

Although Frostburg would control the ball for much of the second half, Mary Washington made the most of its oppurtunities.  Junior Matt Poole would control a loose ball in the Frostburg box and banged home the Eagles only goal of the afternoon in the 70th minute.

The Bobcats would not go down quietly.  Twelve minutes later, Ryan Russell was fouled in the Mary Washington box, but Tyler Back made a diving save on Russell’s penalty shot and the score remained 1-0 in favor of Mary Washington.

The Frostburg offense kept the pressure on the Mary Washington defense as Russell was fouled again near the box in the 83rd minute.  This time Russell’s free kick found the back of the net to knot the score.   Later in the second half, Chris Jones had a good look at the net but his shot would miss wide and the game headed to overtime.

Both teams kept battling throughout overtime, but each team would only have two shots in both overtimes combined.  The Bobcats outshot the Eagles 15-4 in the second half and overtime and 21-7 throughout the game.  Frostburg goalie Abiye Jack made two saves in the contest, while Tyler Back was much busier with 11 stops.

The men’s soccer team returns to non-conference action on Wednesday when they travel to McDaniel at 4:00 p.m.
