Men's Basketball Falls to CAC Foe Salisbury

FROSTBURG, Md. - Chris McGrew scored 18 points and Salisbury did just enough to keep Frostburg State from making a second-half run as the Sea Gulls captured a 73-67 win in CAC men's basketball action, Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops FSU to 6-9 overall and 1-5 in the CAC. SU evened its season mark to 7-7 overall and 2-3 in the league.

The Sea Gulls shot 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from the field in the second half to break open a 34-34 halftime tie. Salisbury also made 18 second half free throws.

Senior Brian Anderson (Perry Hall, Md./Eastern Tech) hit a three-pointer with 9:58 to go in regulation that trimmed the deficit to just one-point, 54-53. Salisbury then collected a 12-2 run that covered almost seven minutes for its largest lead of the game, 66-55.

The Bobcats made one final push and cut the SU lead to just three, 70-67, with just 35 seconds to play. However, Salisbury made three foul shots down the stretch and contested the Bobcats on the offensive end until the final horn.

McGrew finished just 3-of-12 from the field but made 12-of-14 free throws. He also grabbed eight rebounds. David Pearman came of the bench to score 14 points to go along with seven rebounds.

Frostburg State had three players in double figures, led by junior Troy Dockett (South Riding, Va./Freedom) with 18 points behind a game-high eight baskets. Anderson finished with 15 points and seven assists while junior Maurice Williams (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington Central) scored 14.

Anderson opened the contest with back-to-back three-pointers and the Bobcats quickly led 6-0. FSU held onto the momentum and pushed its lead to eight, 16-8, before five-straight points gave the Bobcats the game's largest lead at 21-8.

Salisbury collected itself and rebounded to tie the game at 25-25 with 5:06 left in the first half. The Gulls captured their first lead a few moments later but it didn't last as the two teams entered the locker room tied at 34.

FSU hosts its second-straight CAC game when Stevenson comes to Bobcat Arena on Wednesday at 8:00 pm.
