Men's Hoops Falls to York in Overtime Thriller

FROSTBURG, Md. - Despite a valiant comeback, the Frostburg State University men's basketball team fell to York (Pa.) 101-90 in overtime, Thursday. The game featured 14 ties and 12 lead changes but in the end, York proved too strong.

The Bobcats (7-12, 2-8) battled back from a 10-point second-half deficit and tied the contest with 26 seconds left. FSU had several chances in the closing seconds but couldn't get a shot to drop and the game headed to extra time.

However, in the extra frame, York (13-6, 7-3) scored 22 points behind 16-of-17 free throws (94.1%) to escape with the victory.

Frostburg junior Maurice Williams (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington Central) led all players with a career-high 30 points. He finished 10-of-16 (62.5%) from the field and nearly perfect at the foul line (10-of-11). He accounted for six points in the closing 2:18 to help FSU erase the deficit.

Senior Mhabhushah Koffa (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) finished with a double-double 15 points and 11 rebounds. His final two points of the evening came on two free throws that tied the contest with 26 seconds left in the second half. Senior Brian Anderson (Perry Hall, Md./Eastern Tech) scored 27 points behind a game-high 11 baskets.

York shot 50.9 percent from the field (29-of-57) and had four players in double figures. The Spartans were led by Paul Kouvaris and Kevin Whaley with 24 points each while Dylan Hoffman had 10. Whaley and Hoffman combined for 12 points in overtime and were a perfect 10-for-10 at the foul line.

The first half went back-and-forth as the lead changed nine times. YCP opened up a 17-12 lead just over seven minutes into play, but the Bobcats used a 9-1 spurt to regain the lead at 21-18 with 8:47 left. FSU later led by seven points, 42-35, with 1:16 showing and the hosts entered the break with a six-point cushion, 44-38.

York battled back early in the second half and tied the game for the eighth time (49-49) just prior to six minutes into action. York later appeared to take control after opening up a 10-point lead with just 6:30 to play. However, Williams hit four free throws and Anderson drained a deep three-pointer to kick start the FSU rally.

The Bobcats hit the road on Saturday when they travel to Stevenson at 4:00 p.m.
