FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Frostburg State women’s basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped with a 71-53 loss to Mary Washington, Saturday.
Box Score
FSU (8-10, 5-4) entered the contest having won its last four Capital Athletic Conference games and had worked itself into a tie for third place in the league standings. However, the Eagles (12-5, 8-1) had other ideas as they held onto first place in the league behind excellent three-point shooting.
Mary Washington shot nearly 50.0 percent from the floor in the opening half and drained eight three-pointers on 13 attempts. The UMW defense also limited the Bobcats to just nine baskets and 22 points.
The hosts led from the opening tip and jumped out to a quick 10-point lead, 12-2, before five minutes had expired off the clock. The Eagles kept the pressure on and pushed their advantage to 20 points, 35-15, with 4:08 remaining.
With their final three-pointer of the first, the Eagles led by 23, 38-15, but the Bobcats closed out the half on a 7-0 run to close within 16 points, 38-22 at the break.
Frostburg was able to close within 12 points in the second half but Mary Washington proved too strong and pushed its lead back to 18 at the final buzzer.
Freshman
Elaina Hummel (Huntingdon, Pa./Southern Huntingdon) scored all 14 of her points in the second half as she provided an offensive spark that kept UMW from running away with the game. Hummel finished 4-of-5 with three 3-PT’s in the second.
Senior
Elizabeth Carrington (Clinton, Md./Oxon Hill) was the only other Bobcat in double figures. She scored 14 points, seven in each half. As a team, FSU shot 37.0 percent (20-of-54) from the field and held a 24-16 edge in points from the bench.
Mary Washington finished the afternoon at 50.0 percent (26-of-52) shooting from the field and was almost as hot from behind the arc. UMW drained 10 three-pointers on 21 attempts (47.6%) and outrebounded the Bobcats 40-25. UMW had three players in double figures led by Katie Wimmer with 16.
