Women's Basketball Continues Roll, Beats St. Mary's (Md.), 74-62

St. Mary’s City, Md. – The Frostburg women’s basketball team owned the boards in defeating Capital Athletic Conference foe St. Mary’s (Md.), 74-62, Saturday afternoon. The win gives the Bobcats four consecutive conference wins.

Box Score

Frostburg (8-9, 5-3) dominated the glass, outrebounding the Seahawks, 41-23. Senior center Mindy Sharp (Marlinton, W.Va./Pocahontas County) led the charge with 14 rebounds. With her 12 points, Sharp registered her fifth double-double of the season.

Sharp was one of four Bobcats scoring in double figures on the day. Senior Lisa Byer (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh) and sophomore Stephanie Straka (Jerome, Pa./Conemaugh Township) each led the team with 16 points. Freshman Elaina Hummel (Huntingdon, Pa./Southern Huntingdon) chipped in with 13 points.

They helped the Bobcats get off to a very fast start. With FSU leading, 6-5, early on, Straka hit a lay-up and a three, and Byer hit a jumper to propel an 8-0 run. After St. Mary’s cut the lead to 16-8 at the 9:42 mark, Frostburg again scored eight straight capped by a Byer three with 6:43 remaining in the first half to lead 24-8. The Bobcats carried that lead comfortably into the half, 34-19.

Frostburg managed to keep the Seahawks at arm’s length throughout the second, but St. Mary’s managed to pull within five at 54-49 on a Jamie Roberts jumper with 7:01 remaining. That would be as close as they would come. Hummel converted an old-fashioned three-point play, and Byer knocked one in from beyond the arc to push the lead back to double digits.

The Bobcats were able to overcome 27 turnovers, partly because they forced 24 from the Seahawks. Senior Mercedes White (Bowie, Md./Bowie) chipped in with six points and eight rebounds.

Frostburg kicks off the second half of its conference schedule next Saturday at Mary Washington at 2:00 p.m.
