Bobcats Lose in Overtime to No. 18 Salisbury, 1-0

FROSTBURG, Md. - A golden goal in the 99th minute by Salisbury junior midfielder Morgan Hunt gave No. 18 Salisbury a 1-0 overtime win over the Frostburg State men’s soccer team Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.

Box Score

Hunt’s shot from 25 yards out beat Bobcat senior goalkeeper Stephen Cavallo (Charlotte, N.C./East Lincoln) to his left to keep Salisbury (8-0-2, 3-0) undefeated on the season.

While Salisbury finished with the 3-2 edge in shots on goal, each team had numerous opportunities in regulation to dent the scoreboard.

The two sides played conservatively to begin each half. As time wore down, the scoring chances began to increase.

In the 35th minute, Salisbury forward Trevor Sharpe slid a ball past Cavallo from the right side, but it banged off the left post. In the 42nd minute, sophomore forward Shawn Baker (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) got free behind the defense, but Salisbury keeper John Vnenchak met Baker 15 yards out and made a sliding save.

Salisbury midfielder Jake Perry had the best scoring opportunity for Salisbury in the second half. He fired a bullet from the left side that Cavallo deflected with his right hand over the net in the 77th minute. Off the corner kick, sophomore forward Phil Bucheimer’s header went wide.

In the 81st minute, Frostburg State junior midfielder Michael Bistany (Greenbelt, Md./Damatha Catholic) registered the Bobcats’ lone shot on goal in the second half off of a direct kick. It was saved by Vnenchak.

In overtime, Salisbury senior defender Casey Rector had a header off a throw-in that was stopped by Cavallo. Two minutes later, Hunt kept the Sea Gulls among the ranks of the undefeated.

The Bobcats (3-5-1, 1-1-1) return to action in non-conference play Tuesday at Lycoming at 4:30 p.m.
