FROSTBURG, Md. - A
Shawn Baker (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) goal in the second half pulled the Frostburg State Bobcats even as they went on tie the Marymount Saints, 1-1, Wednesday night at Bobcat Stadium in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both sides.
The teams played to a near deadlock in the opening half, as scoring chances and shots were difficult to come by. Marymount finally broke through late in the first.
The Saints (2-3-1, 0-0-1) opened the scoring in the 36th minute. The play started off of a free kick from junior midfielder Kjell Crooke. His ball from 20 yards out came to the front of the net, where freshman midfielder Nicholas Gruber headed it home to make it 1-0. It was Marymount’s lone shot on goal in the half, which matched Frostburg State’s total.
The Bobcats pulled even in the 60th minute on a Baker’s tally, as he took a headman pass to the right side and slid a left-footer past goalkeeper William Brahmstadt.
Senior goalkeeper
Stephen Cavallo (Charlotte, N.C./East Lincoln) made his first save of the game in the sequence following the Bobcat goal. Junior midfielder Carlos Salinas found an opening in front of the crease but was turned away.
The Bobcats (2-3-1, 0-0-1) were forced to play down a man in the 70th minute after being issued a red card. But the defense stood tall, allowing only a Crooke header that went high over the crossbar in the waning seconds of regulation.
Each team finished with two shots on goal for the contest.
The Bobcats head to Washington & Jefferson for a non-conference match Saturday at 2:00 pm.
