Volleyball Posts Two Wins on First Day of FSU Tournament

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State volleyball team captured a pair of victories over Eastern Mennonite and Capital on the first day of the FSU Tournament, Friday. The Bobcats remain undefeated on the season and push their record to a perfect 8-0.

This year's 8-0 record is the second best start in program history behind a 1999 team that opened the year 12-0.

In the first match, the Bobcats easily got past the Royals (1-5) with a 3-0 shutout (25-17, 25-11, 25-12). Senior Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) set FSU's single match record with 11 service aces and broke Carrie Ness' mark of nine set in August 2002. Along with the 11 aces, Thomas added 11 kills and 11 digs.

Senior Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) added nine kills and 11 digs, while junior Christine Barnes (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) had a pair of aces, five digs and one block.

In the second match, FSU needed four games to earn a win over Capital (3-4). The Bobcats won the opening game 25-18, but the Crusaders evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-22 game two victory. FSU would go on to close out the match with 25-20 and 25-10 scores in the final two games.

Junior Sabrina Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) had 11 kills and five blocks while classmate Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) had 44 assists and three blocks. Stephens led the offensive output with 20 kills, while Thomas had 10 kills and two aces.

Frostburg State opens the second day of the tournament when it hosts N.C. Wesleyan at 10:00 am on court one in Bobcat Arena.
