FROSTBURG, Md. - Seniors
Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) smashed 21 kills and classmates
Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) and
Brittany McVearry (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) combined for 32 digs to power the Frostburg State volleyball team to a 3-1 season-opening win over Washington & Jefferson, Wednesday evening.

FSU captured the match win by the scores of 26-24, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-21. The Bobcats (1-0) have won their last four season openers and sixth-year head coach Peter Letourneau is 5-1 in openers since coming to Frostburg.
The Bobcats outlasted the Presidents (0-1) to earn a game one victory. Neither team held more than a three-point advantage and FSU trailed 23-22 late in the contest before rallying with four of the game's final five points for a 26-24 win.
Frostburg appeared to be in control in game two with several early leads. Late in the contest, FSU held a pair of six-point leads but W&J rebounded to trail 24-22 behind a four-point run. However, the Bobcats picked up the final point for the win.
Washington & Jefferson carried the late game two momentum into the third set with an 8-0 run that resulted in a slim 19-18 lead. FSU later trimmed the deficit to 23-22 but the Presidents captured the final two points for the win.
The Bobcats closed out the match in game four. FSU used a 6-0 run in the middle of the game for a 17-10 lead. W&J narrowed the gap and trailed by just three, 21-19, but FSU scored four of the final six points for the win.
Stephens had 13 digs and one block to go along with her team-high 21 kills. Thomas finished with nine kills, one ace and one block while McVearry led the way with 18 digs.

Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) handed out 45 assists and recorded 15 digs. Junior
Sabrina Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) posted 11 kills while her sister
Amber Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) had nine kills and 11 digs.
The FSU volleyball team returns to the court this weekend at the Haverford Tournament starting on Saturday morning.
