Women's Basketball Gives Away Lead, Falls to Mary Washington, 51-46

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State women's basketball team fell to Capital Athletic Conference opponent, Mary Washington 51-46, Friday evening at Bobcat Arena.

The Bobcats (2-4, 0-2) held a seven-point advantage going into the second half but could not hold on to the lead as the Eagles (4-2, 2-0) came back to bring home the win.

UMW took control of the game early on, leading by as many as 11 points just 3:30 into game play, but FSU chiseled away at the lead and brought the score even at 23-23 with just under four minutes in the half. The Bobcats went on a five-point run to close out the half started by senior Mindy Sharp (Marlinton, W.Va. / Pocahontas County (Garret)) putting in a layup from sophomore Stephanie Straka (Jerome, Pa./Conemaugh Township) to give the Bobcats the lead, 28-25. FSU closed out the half with a 33-26 lead.

Senior Mercedes White (Bowie, Md./Bowie) hit a jumper to open scoring in the second half less than a minute into action to put the Bobcats up 35-26, but the Eagles came back slowly erased the FSU lead. UMW's Jenna McRae hit a jumper with just under 14 minutes to play to take the lead, 38-37 and the Eagles never looked back. Mary Washington led by as many as 14 with 8:34 left but the Bobcats rallied on a nine-point run but ran out of time to bring the final score to 51-46 in favor of the Eagles.

The Bobcats shot 36.2% (17-of-47) from the floor while the Eagles shot 38.9% (21-of-54).

Sharp led all scorers and rebounders with 20 points and 11 boards for the game while UMW's Katie Wimmer put up 19 points just ahead of McRea with 18. Sam Peterson had eight boards for the Eagles.

The Bobcats return to action when they travel to Frederick, Md. to take on CAC opponent Hood at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, Dec. 8.
