FROSTBURG, Md. - Senior
Mindy Sharp (Marlinton, W.Va. / Pocahontas County (Garret)) had a game-high 15 points as the Frostburg State women's basketball team defeated former Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent, Mt. Aloysius, 64-56, on day one of the Jim Crawley Tip-Off Tournament while Gettysburg downed York (N.Y.), 83-56, in the second game of the tournament.
Frostburg State takes on Gettysburg tomorrow in the championship game of the tournament at 4:00 pm while Mt. Aloysius and York (N.Y.) play in the consolation game at 2:00 pm.
Sharp started the scoring early in the first half for the Bobcats (1-0) with a field goal from sophomore
Jackie Kimmel (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) just 40 seconds into game play. FSU went on to score 12-straight points over three minutes of play before the Mounties (0-1) sank two free throws to get on the scoreboard with 15:18 left in the first. Frostburg State did not allow Mt. Aloysius to score from the field until 11:15 was left on the clock. Telish Alexis hit a jumper to cut FSU's lead to 17-12. MTA only had two field goals in the first half.
Frostburg State went on a seven-point run to close out the first half 34-20 over Mt. Aloysius.
FSU held its largest lead over MTA, 20 points, in the second half off a five-point run that was capped with a layup from freshman
Elaina Hummel (Huntingdon, Pa./Southern Huntingdon). Mt. Aloysius went on a seven-point run to cut the FSU lead to 58-48, but could not overcome the Frostburg State offense. MTA's Teddi Burkett sank a three-pointer to end the game and come within eight, 64-56, but Frostburg State held on for the opening-round win.
Sharp added a game-high seven boards to her 15 points while Hummel had 11 points and senior
Elizabeth Carrington (Clinton, Md./Oxon Hill) posted 10 points for FSU. Mount Aloysius' Spring Krepps led her team with 14 points with Kaley Keagy close behind with 12 points and six rebounds.
Frostburg held the advantage in points off the bench, 27-18, and points off turnovers, 20-18.
Gettysburg 83 York (N.Y.) 56
Caitlin Moser led the Bullets with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
The scoring started off slow for both teams with GC (1-0) taking the lead first, 2-0, 1:23 into play. The lead changed hands two times over four minutes until Gettysburg took the lead, 8-7 with 14:27 left and never looked back. GC led 38-32 at the half. The Bullets led by as many as 27 points in the second half to take a convincing 83-56 win over the Cardinals (0-1) on day one of the tournament. Shadee Rice led scoring for the Cardinals with 14 points while Niya Jarvis posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
