FROSTBURG, Md. - Despite sophomore forward
Amanda Wharton (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) netting her team-leading 17th goal of the season in the first half, the Frostburg State Bobcats dropped their Capital Athletic Conference match to York, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
Box Score
Wharton, the reigning Offensive Player of the Week for both the ECAC South and the CAC, gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute. Senior forward
Lauren Russell (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) set her up with a pass to the right side of the box. Wharton chipped it in, and she continues to keep pace with the top scorers in the NCAA.
The Frostburg lead was short-lived, though, as York senior midfielder Allie Jensen rocketed a shot from 15 yards out that grazed the crossbar as it went in over junior goalkeeper
Kristin Prochniak (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill). The goal in the 34th minute sent the teams to the half tied, 1-1.
York (4-6-1, 4-1) managed just a solo shot on goal in the second half, but it turned out the be the game-winner as sophomore midfielder Kat Sipes redirected a corner kick from Steph Mergler in the 77th minute. Freshman forward
Adria Graham (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett), Russell, and Wharton each had a shot in the final 10 minutes, but none of them could pull the Bobcats back even with the Spartans.
Frostburg State (9-2, 3-1) outshot York, 16-7. Wharton led all players with six shots, while Graham and senior midfielder
Taylor Jenkins (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) had three apiece.
Frostburg State return to action Tuesday night at Bobcat Stadium when it hosts Pitt-Greensburg at 7:00 p.m.
