Volleyball Captures Second At the Haverford Tournament

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Senior Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) took home all tournament honors as the Frostburg State volleyball team captured second place at the Haverford Tournament after defeating both Widener, 3-1, and Susquehanna, 3-1, on Saturday.

Frostburg State (4-1) defeated Susquehanna (0-5) with game scores of 25-14, 20-25, 25-17, 25-16 in the first match of the day.

Brooke Winterling led the Bobcats with 17 kills and sophomore Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) handed out 46 assists in the win. Winterling also posted six digs.

Juniors Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) and Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) filled up the boxscore for Frostburg State. Thomas recorded 12 kills, 11 digs, two assists and two blocks while Stephens had 12 kills, five digs, four service aces and one block.

Sophomore Christine Barnes (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) had four service aces in the win and junior Brittany McVearry (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) had 14 digs.

Senior Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett) chipped in seven kills and two blocks while sophomore Sabrina Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) had five kills and two blocks.

In game two, FSU picked up the victory against Widener (3-2) with game scores of 25-17, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18.

Leading in kills was Brooke Winterling with 15 while Stephens smashed 12 and Sabrina Winterling had seven kills, chipping in two blocks. Senior Lacie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) recorded 25 assists while McVearry had 15 digs and three service aces.

Thomas posted 13 digs, five kills, two blocks and two service aces in the win for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats are back on the court Monday, September 7 at Washington and Jefferson at 7:00 pm.
