Field Hockey Wins Fourth Straight; Downs Roanoke 4-2

Sophomore Chelsea Smith and junior Lindsey Frost
FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State won it's fourth-consecutive game behind a pair second half of goals as the Bobcats defeated Roanoke, 4-2, on sunny Sunday afternoon.

The win hands the Bobcats a 6-2 overall record, including a perfect 4-0 slate at home. Meanwhile, the Maroons slip to 0-6 on the season.

Junior Lindsey Frost (Columbia, Md./Hammond) and sophomore Chelsea Smith (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) each scored in the second half as FSU broke a 2-2 tie, almost 12 minutes into the second on Smith's only goal of the contest. Frost later added an insurance goal with less than 30 seconds left in regulation.

Freshman goalkeeper Maggie Edwards (Lebanon, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) did her part in net stopping 10 shots, including three in the final few minutes to preserve a slim one-goal lead for FSU.

Roanoke struck first, just shy of five minutes in, as Helen Pearsall scored off a pass from Mariah Vietri.

Smith assisted on back-to-back FSU goals towards the end of the first half to help the hosts to a 2-1 lead at the break. Smith found Frost off a penalty corner in the 28th minute and then assisted junior Breanne Russell (Clements, Md./Chopticon) with 28 seconds in the half.

Roanoke opened the second half as it did the first, scoring just shy of five minutes into action. Jessica Perkins hit the back of the net off a pass from Abby Bjork as the Maroons tied the game at 2-2 and refused to go away.

Smith gave Frostburg State a 3-2 edge at 46:48 with her third goal of the season. Junior Brooke Tapman (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) fed a pass to Smith from the top of the circle that Smith slipped between Maroon keeper Christina Schicilone and the post.

Roanoke had several key chances, three shots and two penalty corners, with the clock winding down but couldn't tie the contest and Frost put the game away her second score at 69:43.

Frostburg State returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 23 when it hosts Washington & Jefferson at 4:30 pm.
