Frostburg State, Lebanon Valley Capture 3-1 Wins at FSU Quad Match

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball squad rallied past Bridgewater for a 3-1 victory in the opening match of the FSU Quad match, Friday evening. In the second match, Lebanon Valley earned it's 10th-straight victory with a 3-1 win over Neumann.

The win hands FSU (18-3) it seventh-straight win and moves head coach Peter Letourneau within two wins of 100 at the helm of the Bobcat program. Coach Letourneau also needs just three more wins to become the all-time winningest coach in FSU volleyball history.

Meanwhile, Bridgewater (7-10) suffered just its first loss in the last three matches.

The Eagles captured game one, 25-20, after rallying from a 12-7 deficit. Bridgewater used a seven-point run for a 14-12 edge. FSU battled back to tie the game at 17-17, but BC scored five of the next six game points for a 22-18 lead. The Bobcats scored two points to narrow the gap (22-20), but the visitors scored the final three for the win.

The Bobcats roared back in game two, winning 25-6 behind runs of eight and seven points. FSU jumped out 5-0 and Bridgewater later trailed just 10-5. Frostburg State then used a seven-point run to extend its lead to 17-5 and closed out the contest with eight-consecutive points for the win.

The two teams exchanged the lead five times during the third game. Frostburg State opened a 7-3 advantage before the Eagles rebounded for a 12-8 lead. From there, neither led by more than three points as the Bobcats surged out to 17-14 and 19-16 leads. BC tied the game at 20-20, but juniors Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) each recorded two kills late in the match to carry FSU to a 25-22 victory.

Game four featured nine lead changes as FSU rallied for the game’s final eight points for a 25-20 win. The Bobcats opened an early 4-1 lead but the Eagles rebounded for an 11-7 edge. FSU slowly began to chip away at the deficit, using a three-point run to take a 16-15 lead in the middle part of the match. However, Bridgewater moved ahead again for a 20-17 advantage, before the Bobcats closed out the game with the final eight points.

Stephens and senior Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) led FSU with 17 kills each. Winterling added 12 digs while Stephens registered five. Thomas tossed in a complete match with a team-high 17 digs, eight kills, six aces and two assists.

Sophomore Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) had 46 assists while sophomore Amber Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) had nine digs and five aces.

BC was led offensively by Erika Dirnagl with 11 kills followed by Katie Baker with nine kills. Tricia Davis handed out 28 assists while Casey O’Leary had 12 digs.



Neumann Knights vs. Lebanon Valley - LVC 3-1
Joelle Snyder smashed 13 kills to power Lebanon Valley to a 3-1 victory over Neumann in the second match of the first night of the FSU Quad Match, Friday evening.

LVC reached the 20-win plateau (20-1) with its 10th-straight win while Neumann (6-16) suffered just it second loss in its last five matches.

Lebanon Valley captured game one with a commanding 25-9 effort. The game went through three lead changes early on before the Dutchman opened a 9-5 lead that they would not surrender. LVC then ran away with it behind a 14-3 run over the rest of the contest.

Neumann rebounded in game two for a 25-22 win. The Knights never trailed and held 9-4 and 16-12 leads before Lebanon Valley battled back. The Dutchman used a 7-3 run to tie the contest at 19-19 and later trailed by just one (23-22), but Neumann closed out the contest with the final two points.

Lebanon Valley regrouped and won both games three and four for the match victory. In the third set, the Dutchman raced out to a 6-0 lead and later a 13-4 edge. The Knights cut the deficit in half at 16-8, but LVC used a five-point run for a 21-8 lead before taking the third 25-13.

Lebanon Valley carried the momentum into the fourth game, opening with a 13-4 lead. The Dutchman later used an eight-point run for a commanding 23-8 edge. Neumann wouldn’t back down, making a run of its own to narrow the gap to 24-14 late, but LVC recorded the final point for the win.

LVC was led by Snyder with 13 kills followed by Emily Hopkins with nine. Angela Kuperavage had 15 digs, Emily Perkins had 12 and Hannah Free recorded 10. Perkins also led the way with 41 assists.

Emily Gruse powered Neumann with 13 kills while Jerrae Robinson had seven. Cecily Scavicchio handed out 23 assist and Melissa Haines posted 20 digs.
