GREENSBURG, Pa. – The snow and ice that delayed the contest from Wednesday did not cool down the FSU men's basketball team Thursday night as it defeated Pitt-Greensburg 71-45.
Frostburg State (10-8, 7-4) traded blows with host Pitt-Greensburg (5-13, 4-7) for the first eight minutes of the contest to reach a 14-14 tie.
Sophomore
Brian Anderson (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) hit a three pointer to start an 8-0 FSU run that would give the Bobcats a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. Frostburg State used 20 points in the paint in the first half to pull out to a 13-point advantage at the break.
FSU came out after the break hot as freshman
Mac Minturn (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) hit his only shot of the game from behind the arc to cap a 12-2 run that gave Frosburg State a 20-point edge at the 12:59 mark. The FSU bench poured on 20 points in the second half led by senior
Carter Simmons' (Annapolis, Md./Southern) 10 points to build a lead as high as 30 (71-41) and hold on to the final score of 71-45.
Anderson led all scorers with 15 points and three rebounds, while junior
Nick Sefcik (Shady Grove, Md./Damascus) followed close behind with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Sophomore Busha Koffa (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) contributed 10 points and six rebounds as the third starter to finish in double-digit scoring.
Frostburg State's defense made the impact on the game by forcing 18 turnovers and limiting UPG to only one player with 9+ points. FSU also held Pitt-Greensburg to shooting just 15-of-57 from the floor, while shooting 30-of-64 itself.
Frostburg State returns to action as it hosts Medaille on Saturday, January 31 at 3:00 pm.
