Volleyball Rallies Past Elizabethtown, 3-2; Defeats Catholic 3-0

GETTYSBURG, Pa -The Frostburg State volleyball team defeated both Elizabethtown and Catholic on day one of the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic, on Friday. FSU downed Elizabethtown 3-2 and Catholic 3-0.

Frostburg State is 7-0 overall and continues its undefeated start to the season. Only the record setting 1999 team had a longer undefeated start to the season, winning its first 12.

The Bobcat squad rallied to defeat Elizabethtown by game scores of 25-20, 21-25, 18-25, 25-16 and 15-13.

Junior Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) led Frostburg State with 17 kills while sophomore Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) had 14. Winterling also had nine digs and Stephens had four digs and two service aces.

Sophomore Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservior) posted a double-double with 12 digs and 10 kills. Classmate Rachel Burke (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) led the FSU squad with 15 digs while freshman Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) led in assists, handing out 36.

In the second match, Frostburg State defeated Catholic with scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-21.

Carrington led the Bobcats in assists with 29 and Winterling had 15 kills, two blocks and a service ace. Thomas filled up the box score with eight kills, eight digs, three service aces and one block. Burke also had eight digs.

Freshmen Alex Coleman (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) and Margie Maresca (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) led FSU in blocks with three while Carrington had two. Coleman and Maresca also had four kills each.

The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow for day two of the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic at noon.
