HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Frostburg State volleyball team rebounded to earn a split on the final day of the Ducks Classic, Saturday, earning a 3-2 win over Johns Hopkins late in the afternoon to avenge a 3-2 defeat to Haverford earlier in the day.
With the win over the Blue Jays, the Bobcats are now 12-2 on the season and finish the tournament with a 3-1 record.
Junior
Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) smashed a total of 45 kills, had 20 digs and six blocks in the double dip. She had 24 kills in the loss to the Fords. Freshman
Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) and sophomore
Rachel Burke (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) were as equally impressive on the final day. Carrington totaled 91 assists and 17 digs while Burke registered 60 digs.
FSU and JHU battled back and forth through the five-game set. Frostburg State took the early 1-0 lead over JHU with a 25-18 win in game one. Johns Hopkins evened the match with a 25-22 victory in the second game. FSU again moved ahead with a 25-23 win in the third set but the Blue Jays answered with a 25-14 score in the fourth game. The Bobcats ended the match after running away with a 15-9 game-five win.
Sophomore
Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md. /Southern Garrett) chipped in 18 kills, 10 digs and three service aces while classmate
Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) had 18 digs and eight kills in the win over JHU.
In the first match of the day, FSU battled Haverford through a five-game set that had a different result than JHU as the Bobcats fell in game five 15-12. The Bobcats won game's two (25-23) and four (26-24) while the Fords captured game's one (25-19) and three (25-17).
Stephens turned in 16 kills and 13 digs while Thomas had 28 digs, six kills and four assists. Freshman
Margie Maresca (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) recorded a total of 14 kills in both matches but had eight in the loss to Haverford.
The Bobcats return to action when they travel to Catholic on Wednesday, Sept. 17 for a 7:00 pm match.
