Men's Soccer Loses Season Opener; Hood Slips Past La Roche in 2OT

FROSTBURG, Md. - Eastern Mennonite's Mark Pryor netted the game's only goal in the 63rd minute to give the Royals a 1-0 victory over Frostburg State on the opening night of the 2008 FSU Tournament, Saturday.

The contest, the season opener for both teams, had a relatively low shot count as EMU held a slight 8-7 lead of over the Bobcats. FSU led 4-3 in shots at the half but Eastern Mennonite turned up the pressure in the second, scoring on its first shot.

EMU's Junior Kamandua centered a ball that Pryor kicked into the right side of the night for the game-winning goal.

Jackson Maust made one save in net for the Royals while FSU keeper Jay Herford (Crofton, Md./South River) stopped three shots.

The Bobcats are back in action on Sunday when they face Hood at 3:00 pm on the second day of the FSU Tournament.

Hood 1, La Roche 0 - 2OT
Quinn Miller scored in the 103rd minute as Hood slipped past La Roche 1-0 in double overtime in the opening game of the 2008 FSU Tournament, Saturday afternoon.

La Roche dominated the game in shots 26-11 and had several chances in the second half to get on the scoreboard but the Blazers hung in for the win. In the second period and overtimes, the Redhawks outshot Hood 16-5 but Miller collected a lose ball in the box and planted a shot in the bottom right corner of the goal for the dramatic finish. The goal was the only shot taken by Hood in either overtime session.

Blazer goalie Shawn Fernholz made 11 total saves, including seven in the second half to keep his squad in the game. Jonathan Happel and Anthony Bishop each made four saves in net for La Roche.

La Roche plays EMU tomorrow at 1:00 pm on the second day of the tournament.
