OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Sophomore
Katelyn Coffey (Middletown, Md./Middletown) struckout five and earned a win in game one (5-4) and Frostburg State needed eight innings to steal a 4-3 win over Villa Julie in game two and complete the sweep in the final regular-season games for FSU, Wednesday.
Coffey tossed all 7.0 innings for the Bobcats allowing just three earned runs while collecting her 13th win of the season.
FSU trailed 2-0 heading into the top of the fourth when it scored three runs for a 3-2 edge. Freshman
Brooke Tapman (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) started the inning with a single to left and a steal of second base. She then scored when senior
Amanda Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./North County) singled to left for FSU's first run of the contest. Two batters later, freshman
Kathryn Claeys (Sterling, Va./Dominion) doubled home both Baldwin and sophomore
Samantha Quirin (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley) to give the Bobcats the lead for good.
Frostburg State added to its lead with a single score in the fifth, 4-2. Sophomore
Lindsay Freitag (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a ground out by sophomore
Kelly Filipowicz (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach).
The Mustangs (14-16) scored one in the sixth to cut the score to 4-3 in favor of the Bobcats. Freitag scored on a Tapman single in the seventh and VJC plated one in the bottom of the seventh to end the scoring.
Tapman finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored, Claeys was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and Baldwin was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
In the second contest, the Bobcats scored one run in the top of the eighth to break a 3-3 tie and earn the win.
Freshman
Kelly Callan (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) tossed all 8.0 innings fanning two while giving up three runs, two earned.
Villa Julie scored one in the bottom of the first but FSU rebounded with a pair in the second. Senior
Lindsay Seal (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) singled home junior
Kaitlyn Wagner (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) for the first run of the inning and Freitag singled home senior
Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack) for the second.
After the Mustangs tied the game with a run in the third, Tapman drew a bases loaded walk that scored freshman
Victoria Krichbaum (Olney, Md./Sherwood) in the fourth. VJC again tied the game in the fifth with a run but Dabkowski scored Filipowicz with an RBI ground out in the eighth for what proved to be the game winner.
Seal led the team with three hits during the game, 3-for-4 with one RBI while Wagner was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Frostburg State returns to action on Friday when the team travels to Hilbert for the AMCC Championships. FSU takes on Pitt-Bradford at noon.
