STAFFORD, Va. - The Frostburg State baseball team picked up its first two wins of the season with 8-0 and 9-3 victories over SUNY Old Westbury, Saturday in Stafford, Va.
The Bobcats (2-4) made quick work of the visiting Panthers (0-6) in game one using a big fourth inning to take charge of the game. To lead off the inning seniors Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) would hit back-to-back singles followed by a David Lanier (Laurel, Md./Atholton) walk to load the bases.
Junior catcher Andrew Sacks (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) would come to the plate with two outs and clear the bases with a three-run triple to deep right field. Senior John Micklus (La Plata, Md./McDonough) would continue the inning on a Panther fielding error only to be drove in by senior Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) who would follow with the second triple of the inning.
Frostburg State would tack on two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to close the game as sophomore Freddy Foshay (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) (1-1) pitched a gem throwing a complete game two-hitter for the win.
Mitchell would lead all hitters delivering a 3-for-4 performance with two triples and an RBI on the day. Speights would end the day 2-for-2 and record an RBI as well as two runs scored.
In the second game of the afternoon, Old Westbury would take a 2-1 advantage into the bottom of the fourth inning with pitcher David Collado throwing a one-hitter. Collado would lose control in the fourth as he walked junior Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) and hit Lanier with sophomore Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) reaching on a fielder’s choice. Two wild pitches and a passed ball would lead to Clark scoring the tying run followed by a balk allowing Garrity to the go ahead run for FSU.
The Panthers would knot the score at 3-3 in the top of the fifth, but the Bobcats would respond with one swing of the bat as Clark would belt a three-run home run to drive in Speights and Peake who had both singled to lead off the bottom of the inning.
The slug-fest would continue in the sixth as Frostburg State added another three-run homerun off the bat of Peake to score Mitchell and Speights to close out the game.
Sophomore reliever Spencer Barnard (Bloomington, Md./Bloomington) would earn his first win after taking over for freshman starter Trevor Conner (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia/Kent School) with one out in the fifth. Barnard would allow one hit in 1.1 innings of work before giving way to freshman Kevin Collier (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) to finish out the game for the save.
Peake would lead all batters going 2-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored and two walks. Mitchell went 2-for-3 to end the day reaching base on six out of eight at-bats.
