FROSTBURG, Md. - Ahmad Salim netted the game-winning goal in the 78th minute to hand No. 3 seed Penn State Behrend a 1-0 victory over No. 2 seed Frostburg State in the AMCC Tournament semifinals, Wednesday at Bobcat Stadium.
Despite the loss, FSU (13-4-1) awaits a bid to the 2008 ECAC Tournament which will be announced early next week. Meanwhile, PSB (13-6-1) advances to the AMCC Championship game (Sat., Nov. 8) and awaits the winner of No.1 Medaille/No. 5 La Roche.
The Bobcats, which led 11-8 in shots, stifled the Lion attack in the first half. PSB attempted just three shots, all by Salim, while FSU took six shots and forced Behrend keeper Dustin Walker to make three saves to keep the score knotted at 0-0 at halftime.
Frostburg State's best opportunity to find the net came with three shots midway through the first half. Junior Ricky Marchant (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) hit a shot wide (21:21) and freshman Jason King (Herndon, Va./Herndon) and senior Adam Gracia (Rockville, Md./Wootton) had a pair of shots at 23:50 and 25:40 that were saved by Walker.
In the second period, Penn State Behrend turned up the pressure as they took five shots and found the net on its final attempt of the game. Salim accepted a pass and knocked the ball off a Bobcat defender before sliding in past Bobcat keeper Jay Herford (Crofton, Md./South River) into the lower right corner.
Just 30 seconds later, junior Sean Jones (Pasadena, Md./Severna Park) had a chance at the equalizer but his shot on the Behrend goal was turned away by Walker to keep the Lion lead safe at 1-0.
Both goalkeepers made four saves while Herford suffered just his fourth loss of the 2008 season.
