Men's Basketball Defeats Goucher in Second Round of Provident Pride Tournament

STEVENSON, Md. - Sophomore Blake Walker (Frostburg, Md./Northern Garrett) scored a career-high 16 points to lead the Frostburg State men’s basketball team to a 64-56 defeat of Goucher in the second round of the Provident Pride Tournament, Saturday at Stevenson University.

Box Score

The Bobcats are now 2-1 on the season and an even 1-1 in the tournament after losing to Johns Hopkins (69-66) in the opening round. Meanwhile, the Gophers open the season 0-3 including a 76-68 first round loss to Salisbury.

FSU, which led by double digits for most of the second half, shot 50.0 percent from the floor (25-for-50) while the Bobcat defense held the Gophers to just 26.8 percent (15-for-56) from the field. Despite never leading in the contest, Goucher out rebounded Frostburg State (42-36) and made more free throws (25-9).

Walker, 6-for-10 from the field, was followed by 10 points from senior Keith Hazel (Weirton, W.Va./Weir). Sophomore Steven Ogg (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) was third with nine points while senior Juan Wansley (Odenton, Md./Arundel) and sophomore Brian Anderson (Perry Hall, Md./Eastern Tech) each netted eight.

Darrin Boswell led the Gophers with 11 points while reserve Amir Hakim came off the bench to add 10. Boswell also managed a game-high eight boards.

Hazel hit the game’s first three-pointer just past the five-minute mark in the opening half to give FSU the early 11-4 lead. Goucher scored six-straight points, four from Hakim, to cut the deficit to just one (11-10) at 12:17, but that is as close as GC would come.

Over the next seven minutes, Frostburg State pushed its lead to 12 (27-15) and at 3:35 the Bobcats took their first of three 16-point leads in the first half. Hakim closed out the first with a pair of free throws to cut the FSU lead to 35-21 at intermission.

Frostburg State controlled the entire second half as it led by 10 or more until the final 30 second of the game. The Bobcats held two 18-point leads before the midway point of the second but the Gophers cut the deficit to eight points with 30 seconds to go on a jumper from Boswell.

FSU pushed the lead back to 10 (64-54) with two foul shots with seven seconds remaining but the Gophers’ Miguel Negron made a late layup to bring the final score to 64-56.

The Bobcats square off against McDaniel in the final round of the tournament tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm.
