WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Matt Brady netted the game-winning goal as the Frostburg State men's soccer team was defeated by Catholic University, 3-2, in the Eastern College Athletic Conference South Tournament semifinals, on Saturday.
Frostburg State ends its season with a 14-5-1 record while CU will play for the ECAC Championship title against King's College November 16. FSU outshot the Cardinals 19-10, 11 of which came in the second half of the game.
CU (14-6) took the lead early after Brady scored his first goal of the game at the 4:42 mark after shooting the ball near the upper right post.
At 11:29, Brian White gave the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage over the Bobcats after he netted his goal which was deflected off senior goalkeeper
Jay Herford (Crofton, Md./South River), ending the scoring in the first half.
Freshman
Jason King (Herndon, Va./Herndon) put the Bobcats on the board at 63:12, when he kicked the ball into the upper right corner of the goal off a header pass from junior
Sean Jones (Pasadena, Md./Severna Park). Jones now leads the team in assists with seven.
With under seven minutes left in the game, Jones netted his ninth goal of the season and tied the game at 2-2, to end second half scoring and to send the game into overtime. Jones scored his goal off an assist from junior
Greg Bistany (Greenbelt, Md./St. John's College) after a scramble in front of the net.
In the first overtime, both FSU and CU each only had one shot neither of which found the net, forcing the game into another overtime.
In the 101st minute, Brady scored his second goal of the game on a breakaway off an assist from Kevin Duffy to give the end score of 3-2.
Cardinal goalkeeper Daly Quinn had eight saves in the win while Herford suffered the loss, making two saves.
