FROSTBURG, Md. - Junior
Sean Jones (Pasadena, Md./Severna Park) scored the only goal the Frostburg State men's soccer team needed as it downed Washington & Jefferson 1-0 to advance to the ECAC South Tournament semifinals, on a cold and rainy Wednesday evening at Bobcat Stadium.
The Bobcats (14-4-1) will now face No. seed 3 Catholic in the tournament semifinals on Saturday, November 15 at a time and place that will be announced later.
Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Coach of the Year Keith Byrnes picked up his 100th career victory in the win and has his Bobcats in the ECAC semi's for the second-consecutive year.
FSU held the advantage offensively for much of the game as it outshot the Presidents (9-8-4) 19-6 including a 10-2 edge in the decisive first half. After a W&J foul placed the ball just outside the 18-yard box, Jones powered a free kick into the lower right corner of the goal (17:03) past a diving Tyler Hodgins for a 1-0 edge.
The Bobcats managed six other first half shots but Hodgins made three more saves to keep the contest at 1-0 at the break.
In the second half, the Presidents narrowed the shot deficit to 9-4 but failed to find the net. FSU goalkeeper
Jay Herford (Crofton, Md./South River) needed just two saves in the win while Hodgins finished the contest with seven saves.
