Volleyball Shuts Out Pitt-Bradford in Season Finale

FROSTBURG, Md. - In a battle for the second seed in the upcoming Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Volleyball Tournament, Frostburg State left little doubt that it is deserving as the Bobcats defeated Pitt-Bradford 3-0 in the regular-season finale for both schools, Saturday.

With the victory, FSU wrapped up the second seed and a first-round bye in the conference tournament with a 27-5 overall record and an 8-1 league mark. The Bobcats begin tournament action on Friday, November 7 when they travel to host and top seed Penn State Behrend for a semifinal match with the winner of the No. 3/No. 6 seeds at 8:00 pm.

Frostburg State ran away with all three games early on in the shutout over the Panthers (14-13, 6-3).

Junior Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) smashed five kills early in game one, helping FSU to a 14-2 advantage and eventually a 25-11 win.

Frostburg State again raced out to a big lead early in the second game as the Bobcats opened a 17-3 lead behind the serving of sophomore Brittany McVearry (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and freshman Christine Barnes (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport). Winterling contributed six kills and a block during the run and FSU posted a pair of three-point jolts late in the contest for a 25-8 win.

The Bobcats completed the trifecta when they opened a 16-4 lead in the third set. Pitt-Bradford cut the deficit in half at 18-9 but Winterling and sophomore Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md. /Southern Garrett) recorded a handful of kills late in the game to give FSU a 25-12 win.

Winterling finished the match with 20 kills and a pair of digs while sophomore Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) had six kills and eight digs. Freshman Sabrina Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) also posted six kills.

Freshman Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) handed out 38 assists and sophomore Rachel Burke (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) led the way with 16 digs.
