Volleyball's Win Streak Improves to Eight Straight

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State volleyball team defeated non-conference opponent Goucher College, 3-0, to give the team its eighth-straight win, Wednesday night in Bobcat Arena. Game scores were 25-22, 25-10, 25-15.

FSU (19-2, 1-0) has not lost a game in the past seven matches, sweeping its competitors 3-0.

The toughest game for the Bobcats was the first with the two teams exchanging leads throughout the game until junior Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) started a run with a kill that would give the final score of 25-22.

In the second game, FSU jumped to an early 7-3 lead after a service ace from Winterling. The Bobcats enlarged their lead to eight points, 12-5, after a kill by sophomore Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md. /Southern Garrett). Frostburg State would only allow the Gophers to score five points before ending the match at 25-10. Three of the last four points came from the Bobcats, including a block from sophomore Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir).

Frostburg State started game three with a 13-3 lead over Goucher which included two kills from both Winterling and Stephens. The Gophers rallied back to within seven points of the Bobcats four times with the last coming at the score of 22-15. The Bobcats scored the last three points to end the scoring of the game, 25-15, giving them the victory.

Leading the squad in kills was Winterling with 13. She was followed by Stephens with 11 and Thomas with six. Winterling also had two service aces while Stephens had one. Thomas chipped in seven digs and led with two blocks.

Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) handed out 30 assists while posting in 11 digs. Sophomore Rachel Burke (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) also had 11 digs in victory over the Gophers.

Freshman Christine Barnes (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) had two service aces while junior Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett) posted four kills and one block.

The Bobcats return to action in Bobcat Arena on October 4 in a tri-match against Hilbert at 11:00 am and Stevenson at 3:00 pm.
