PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Frostburg State softball team's season comes to a close after losing to Medaille, 3-2, in the opening round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament, Friday morning.
FSU ends the spring with a 16-19 overall record and an 11-7 conference record while Medaille (15-16, 12-6) moves on to the championship portion of the tournament and will take on host and top-seeded La Roche.
The game was tied 2-2 when the Mavericks’ Shannon Superczynski singled home LeighAnn Superczynski for the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
FSU twice held the lead in the contest, 1-0 in the fourth and 2-1 in the sixth, but Medaille hung tough until earning the win late in the game.
Senior Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) suffered the loss for the Bobcats alllowing just three runs on eight hits while striking out 10 in 6.0 innings. Michelle Peruzzini earned the win giving up two runs on nine hits for the Mavs.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Wagner (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) scored the first run for the Bobcats in the fourth when she led off the inning with a single. She advanced to second on a ground out and crossed home plate on a single from freshman Kelly Filipowicz (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach).
After Medaille answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth, FSU took a 2-1 advantage in the sixth when Wagner walked and scored when junior Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack) doubled.
MED tied the game in the bottom of the sixth and captured the victory in the seventh.
Filipowicz led FSU with two hits and an RBI while Wagner had two runs scored and a single.
