Football Victorious on Homecoming; Beats Union 28-7

FROSTBURG, Md. - Senior Andre Dixon (Washington, D.C./Roosevelt) accounted for two touchdowns and Frostburg State totaled three rushing scores as it defeated Union (Ky.) 28-7 on Homecoming, Saturday afternoon in front of 2,896 at Bobcat Stadium.

FSU (2-5) also celebrated senior day as 13 players helped the Bobcats to their fourth-straight win on Homecoming.

Statistically, the game was much closer than it appeared as FSU held a slim 16-15 edge in first downs, a 352-295 margin in total yards and a 30:37 to 29:23 lead in time of possession. However, FSU outrushed the Bulldogs (2-6) 238-145 and the visitors hurt themselves with 11 penalties for 84 yards.

Frostburg State came out quickly with touchdowns on three of it first four drives. On their first score, the Bobcats drove 80 yards in 11 plays with Dixon pushing his way into the endzone behind his offensive line for a one-yard touchdown as FSU took a 6-0 lead. Sophomore Nathan Menhorn (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) booted the extra point as Frostburg State assumed a 7-0 lead.

On its second drive, FSU jumped ahead 14-0. After holding UC to minus three yards on three plays, the Bobcats took over on their own 49-yard line and marched 51 yards in just seven plays for the touchdown. Dixon, who passed for a season high 128 yards against UC, found junior Jared McCormick (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothers Valley) in the endzone for a 14-yard scoring pass.

On its third possession of the game, FSU missed a 25-yard field goal after holding the Bulldogs on four downs. However, the Bobcats made up for it on their fourth drive going 73 yards on 14 plays covering 6:28 for their third and final touchdown of the opening half. Freshman Anton Wade (Baltimore, Md./Patterson) handed the hosts a 21-0 lead with a five-yard scoring run.

Midway through the third, FSU scored its third rushing touchdown of the afternoon when senior Shanorm Young (Baltimore, Md./Polytech) found the endzone from six yards out, capping a 14 play 73-yard drive.

All four of the Bobcat scoring drives covered 50-plus yards.

Union scored its only touchdown with 5:51 left in the fourth quarter when Kyle Callahan found Chris Callopy for an 11-yard touchdown. The drive was the second longest for the Bulldogs covering 55 yards in seven plays. UC's longest drive, 66 yards in eight plays, was its first drive of the fourth quarter but ended with an interception by FSU senior Johan Owens (Baltimore, Md./City College).

Wade led the Bobcats in rushing with 90 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown while Young finished with 69 yards on 15 carries and a score. Dixon finished the afternoon 10-for-17 for 128 yards and a touchdowns and 10 rushes for 18 yards and the game's opening score.

The FSU defense was led by three seniors; Jim Robertson (Sussex, NJ/High Point), Gabe Ellis (Laurel, Del./Delmar) and Najier Frazer (Bowie, MD/Duval). Robertson finished with 12 total tackles, 2.0 TFL and a pass breakup while Ellis had nine stops, two for loss, and a sack. Frazer had six tackles, two for loss and a pass breakup.

Frostburg State travels to Westminster next Saturday for a 1:30 pm kickoff.
