Southern Virginia Stuns Football, 35-20

FROSTBURG, Md. - Luke Taylor threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns to lead Southern Virginia to a 35-20 victory over Frostburg State in its home opener on a chilly Saturday evening at Bobcat Stadium.

SVU (4-4) scored in every quarter including 14 points in the fourth to outpace FSU (1-5). The Bobcats tied a season high in total points (20) with touchdowns in each of the final three quarters.

Fumbles plagued Frostburg State all evening as the hosts lost the football four times including twice inside the Knight 10-yard line. The Knights scored a touchdown after the first fumble covering 95 yards in five plays for a 28-12 lead.

Freshman Anton Wade (Baltimore, Md./Patterson) led the Bobcats offensively with 20 carries for 102 yards and two touchdown. Senior Andre Dixon (Washington, D.C./Roosevelt) completed 14-of-21 passes for 103 yards and ran 16 times for 85 yards and one touchdown. As a team, the Bobcats ran for 216 yards on 43 carries.

Southern Virginia scored its first touchdown with 48 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Hayes Page, who ran for 207 yards on 29 carries and two scores, ran into the endzone from nine yards out to give the visitors a 7-0 lead. SVU tacked on seven more points with 5:28 left in the second as Taylor hooked up with McKay Dunn for the first of two touchdown connections on the evening.

Wade answered for the Bobcats on the ensuing possesion, capping a seven-play 57-yard drive with a five-yard scoring run into the right side of the endzone to cut the deficit to 14-6.

Dixon pulled FSU to within two points at 14-12, 5:25 into the third quarter with a two-yard scoring run.

SVU would answer, however, with back-to-back touchdowns for a 28-12 edge. Taylor found Alex Johnson alone on the left side of the endzone for a three-yard scoring toss late in the third quarter while Dunn and Taylor hooked up one more time with 11:19 to go in the game. Both scores capitalized FSU fumbles including the first inside the Knight redzone.

Frostburg State took advantage of a SVU mistake just before the midway point in the fourth. Tyrell Demby (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) picked off a Taylor pass at the Southern Virginia nine and on the very next play Wade ran nine yards for his second touchdown of the evening as FSU trailed 28-20.

On their next drive, the Knights dashed the comeback hopes of Frostburg State with a 10-play 79-yard drive that spanned 6:10, capped by Page's final touchdown on the game that pushed the lead to 35-20.

Shea Owens led both teams with 15 tackles, he forced three fumbles and recovered a fumble in the game. Senior Gabe Ellis (Laurel, Del./Delmar) made nine stops including a pass breakup.

FSU returns to action next Saturday as it hosts Union (Ky.) on Homecoming at 1:00 pm.
