Football Scores Late Touchdown to Defeat NAIA Union (Ky.), 7-3

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Junior Jim Robertson (Sussex, N.J./High Point) returned a blocked punt 15 yards for a touchdown with a little over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to lead Frostburg State to a 7-3 win over NAIA Union (Ky.), Saturday afternoon.

FSU (1-5) earned its first win of the season and snapped a seven-game losing streak that dated back to the final two games of the 2005 season.

Both teams battled through three scoreless quarters until UC (2-5) got on the board when Chad Wilson kicked a 37-yard field goal with 7:48 left.

On the ensuing possession, Frostburg State moved down to the UC 15 and had a chance to tie the game, but a 32-yard field goal was blocked by the Bulldogs’ Ty Harris.

UC would then take over on its a own 13-yard line. Union moved the ball to its 39 on six plays but the drive stalled when the team failed to convert on third and eight.

On fourth down, Michael McNay’s punt was blocked by junior Gabe Ellis (Laurel, Del./Delmar) and Robertson returned it for the go ahead score.

On the final drive of the game, UC appeared to have life when Luke Moore completed a pass to Chris Collopy for 22 yards on fourth down and 10 to the FSU 40.

However, the Bobcat defense then held the Bulldogs to five yards on the next four plays and forced Moore into two incomplete passes as UC turned the ball over to the Bobcats with nine seconds left.

Frostburg State outgained Union through the first three quarters, 161-86. FSU mounted its best drive of the day with 8:10 left in the second quarter.

The Bobcats started on their own 14 and moved 67 yards on 11 plays to the UC 20, but turned the ball over on downs when FSU failed to convert on fourth and eight. The drive was highlighted by a junior running back Shanorm Young (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic) 29-yard run.

For the game, Frostburg State outgained Union in totals yards (255-175) and passing yards (138-35). However, the Bulldogs had the edge in field position, starting on their own 40 while FSU was forced to start from its 22. UC also won the turnover battle forcing Frostburg State to fumble twice.

Young led FSU in rushing with 72 yards on 14 carries while Union’s ground attack was paced by Terence Pollock who had 127 yards on 28 carries.

Junior quarterback Andre Dixon (Washington, D.C./Eleanor Roosevelt) finished the contest 10-of-17 for 138 yards while senior wideout T.J. Changuris (Frederick, Md./Seneca Valley) caught three balls for 49 yards.

Ellis led the Frostburg State defense with 11 stops, six solo and five assisted, including one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. Junior defensive back Najier Frazer (Bowie, Md./Duval) was second on the team with 10 tackles, three solo and seven assisted, with 1.5 tackles for loss.

Frostburg State returns to action next Saturday, when it hosts Westminster at 1:00 pm on Homecoming.
