Winterling and Wassell Lead Volleyball to a 3-0 Shutout of Pitt-Greensburg

FROSTBURG, Md. - Freshmen Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) and Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett) each recorded 15 kills to lead Frostburg State to a 3-0 sweep of Pitt-Greensburg, Tuesday evening.

FSU downed UPG by the scores of 30-26, 30-19 and 30-23.

Frostburg State improved to 10-17 overall and 5-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference while Pitt-Greensburg falls to 7-12 and 2-4 in the league.

FSU broke a 7-7 tie in game one and jumped out to a 19-11 advantage. UPG battled its way back with six-straight points to narrow the score to 20-18 and would eventually come within one point at 27-26. Frostburg State would close out the game by scoring the final three points for a 30-26 win.

Game two proved to be in favor of the hosts from start to finish. After FSU opened a 6-1 lead, UPG rebounded to narrow the game at 10-9. Frostburg State pulled away from Pitt-Greensburg after that, opening leads of 19-13 and 25-14 before capturing a 30-19 victory.

Frostburg State opened game three with a 14-4 lead. Winterling, Wassell and fellow freshman Sara Wolz (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) led the charge for FSU with two kills each and junior Sarah Nugent (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) posted two service aces. UPG would later narrow a 25-13 FSU lead to 26-19 with but Frostburg State would score the final four points for a 30-23 win.

Winterling had her 14th double-double after adding 14 digs and Wassell added nine digs and one service ace.

Senior setter Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) handed out 32 assists and posted 11 digs while sophomore Jennifer Wheaton (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) had 10 digs.

Frostburg State returns to the court on Saturday, October 21 when it hosts Lake Erie at 1:00 pm.
